Credit report notices
Credit report site says it can't verify your identity — how do you get your report?
This message means the credit bureau could not match the details you typed, or your quiz answers, to the file it holds. It does not mean your report is gone or that you are blocked. You can still request the report by phone or mail. The official request site must tell you what extra information or documents it needs and how to send them. Thin credit files, old addresses, name variations, and identity theft can all cause it.
Screenshot the “unable to verify” screen or save the letter, and write down which bureau said it and the date.

This notice
You tried to get your credit report and the screen or letter said the bureau is unable to verify your identity. The online request stopped, and you were told to call, mail a form, or send documents.
It often shows up on AnnualCreditReport.com after the multiple-choice security quiz. It can also appear when you sign in at Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion directly. Some people get a mailed letter instead, asking for proof of identity or a current address.
This is not LIVE transunion-mixed-file. That guide is for a report that shows someone else’s account. Keep this page when you cannot get the report at all.
This is not LIVE credit-application-adverse-action-notice or LIVE checking-account-denied-chexsystems. Those guides are for a lender or bank that denied you based on a report. Keep this page when the problem is reaching your own file.
The CFPB page What information do I need to provide to get my free credit report? says you give your name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth. Online and phone requests also ask questions that others would not know, such as your monthly mortgage payment. Wrong answers, or a file that does not match what you typed, lead to this message.
Regulation V, at 12 CFR § 1022.136, covers the official free-report site. When a consumer cannot be properly identified, it must say the identity cannot be verified. It must also give directions on how to finish the request, including what extra information or documents are needed and how to send them.
Official path
-
Save the message. Screenshot the screen or keep the letter. Write down the bureau, the date, and any reference number. Note which questions you could not answer.
-
Request by phone or mail. The CFPB page How do I get a free copy of my credit reports? lists three routes. Use AnnualCreditReport.com, call (877) 322-8228, or mail the Annual Credit Report Request Form to Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281. You can order one bureau at a time.
-
Send only what the notice asks for. Read the directions on the screen or letter and send copies of those exact documents. Experian’s own page says you can upload proof of identity, or mail it to Experian, P.O. Box 4500, Allen, TX 75013, with a note asking for your report. Do not mail originals. Do not send papers to any address you cannot confirm on the bureau’s own site.
-
Check what might not match. Experian lists common causes: a lender name that differs from your card or statement, an account where you are only a cosigner, or a file linked with someone who has a similar name, such as a Jr. or Sr. If another bureau’s report loads, read its personal information section. Look for a short or old name, an old address, or a wrong birth date.
-
Allow the processing time. The CFPB page How long does it take to get my free credit report after I order it? says phone and mail requests are mailed within 15 days. It says to allow two to three weeks for delivery, and that it can take longer when the bureau needs more information to verify you. Mark the date you sent your request.
-
Act on signs of identity theft. If the quiz asked about loans, cards, or addresses you never had, follow the CFPB page What should I do if I think someone has stolen my identity?. Once the report arrives, dispute anything that is not yours.
-
Complain if the request never finishes. If you sent the requested documents and heard nothing, or got the same letter again with no new instructions, file at Submit a complaint. Attach the screenshot or letter, your mailing receipts, and a short timeline.
Some online tips say you must buy a monitoring plan to see your report after this error. The CFPB says the free report is available online, by phone, or by mail. Official steps win that conflict.
What people reported
Often helps
- Mailing the request after the online quiz failed, instead of retrying the quiz again and again. Repliers in 2025 threads on r/personalfinance and r/IdentityTheft pointed to the mail route as the normal next step.
- Hearing that a freeze is usually not the cause. In a June 2025 r/IdentityTheft thread, a replier said the error usually follows failed security questions.
- Waiting until there is more credit history. In a February 2026 r/ITIN thread about a new credit file, people described an “unable to verify” screen that cleared months later.
Often fails
- Emailing documents to customer service and accepting a “resolved” reply without checking access. A July 2025 r/personalfinance poster said TransUnion closed the case but sign-in still failed.
- Assuming the error means the report was deleted or permanently blocked. Posters described getting the report once the mail or document step was finished.

FAQ
- Does this mean someone stole my identity?
- Not by itself. Experian lists ordinary reasons, such as a lender name that looks different on your report, an account where you are only a cosigner, or a file linked with a relative who shares your name. It also says fraud is possible. If the security questions asked about accounts or addresses you never had, treat it as possible identity theft and use the CFPB identity theft steps.
- Will a credit freeze stop me from getting my own report?
- A freeze is meant to stop new lenders from pulling your file. Posters who asked this were usually told the freeze was not the cause and that failed security questions were. If you are unsure, request the report by mail and see whether the bureau answers with a request for documents.
- How long does the mail or phone route take?
- The CFPB says phone and mail requests are processed and mailed within 15 days, and you should allow two to three weeks for delivery. It also says it may take longer if the credit reporting company needs more information to verify your identity.
- Is this the same as a mixed file?
- No. LIVE transunion-mixed-file is for a report you already have that shows someone else’s account. Keep this page when you cannot get the report at all. If the report you finally receive shows another person’s accounts or addresses, switch to the mixed-file guide.
