Bank account notices

Chase closed my account and is holding the balance

Plain answer

Chase ended the account but may still be reviewing or offsetting the balance. Ask in writing for the hold reason, available amount, and delivery timing.

Act soonNo single federal payout deadline applies to every closure; ask in writing now because holds, setoffs, legal process, and pending transactions differ.
First move

Save the closure letter and a statement showing the balance, pending transactions, and last successful access.

This notice

The letter says, “We have decided to close your account.” Closure ends normal account use, but the remaining balance may still be subject to pending items, claims, setoffs, legal process, or other holds.

Urgent?

There is no single federal deadline for every residual balance. Act now to protect incoming deposits and payments, and get the hold category and expected delivery timing in writing.

First move

Save the notice and a current statement that shows the balance and every pending item.

Official path

  1. Move direct deposits and scheduled payments to another account without sending new money into the closed account.
  2. Call the number on the closure letter and ask for the case number, hold category, available balance, and residual-balance method.
  3. Send a written request asking for the closure reason that Chase can disclose and the expected timing for any check or transfer.
  4. Compare the response with the closing-account section of the Chase Deposit Account Agreement.
  5. Submit a CFPB checking and savings account complaint if Chase does not explain the status or release an undisputed balance.
  6. Contact the regulator listed for your bank or state if the CFPB routes you there or the issue falls under that regulator.

What people reported

Often helps

  • People reported that asking for the hold category and residual-check tracking number produced more useful answers than asking only when money would arrive.
  • People reported that a simple timeline of closure, deposits, pending items, and calls made complaint review easier.

Often fails

  • People reported repeatedly visiting branches without a written case number while the closure or review team controlled the account.

To Chase:

I received notice dated [NOTICE DATE] that Chase closed my account. The last statement or account record shows a balance of [AMOUNT]. I am requesting a written status for that balance.

Please identify the amount currently available, the amount subject to any hold, and the general category and start date of each hold. Please also identify any pending transaction, fee, claim, setoff, or legal process affecting the balance. If Chase can disclose a closure reason, please provide it.

Please state how and when the remaining undisputed balance will be sent, including any check date, mailing address, transfer details, or tracking information. My current mailing address is listed above.

I enclosed the closure notice and the statement showing the balance. Please respond in writing.

Sincerely,

Stop here if…

  • Chase identifies a garnishment, levy, court order, or government hold; contact the issuing authority or a lawyer about that process.
  • The bank claims a setoff you dispute or the held balance is needed for an immediate housing or medical emergency; seek qualified local help.
  • You suspect an employee, joint owner, or thief moved funds; use the bank’s fraud process and preserve transaction records.

FAQ

Can Chase close an account without my permission?
Its current deposit agreement says either side may close an account at any time, subject to the agreement and law. That does not answer what happens to a particular remaining balance.
Is there a fixed deadline for the residual check?
Do not assume one deadline applies to every closure. Pending items, claims, setoffs, legal process, or other holds can affect release, so ask Chase for the specific status in writing.
What is a setoff?
A setoff is when a bank applies money in an account to a debt it says you owe it, where the agreement and law allow. Ask Chase to identify any setoff and the amount.
Can I file a CFPB complaint?
Yes, the CFPB accepts checking and savings account complaints, including funds not received after closure. Attach the closure notice, statements, and your written request to Chase.
